Sisters! How are you! Guess what! I can talk again! Oh. My. Goodness. So I was feeling a little froggy last episode, but I had no idea what was to come. I completely lost my voice. Ka-put! And let me tell you, you have an idea how much you talk until you can’t. It was brutal. Now, granted, I talk for a living, but I would take large blocks of time off to let my voice rest, and I could not believe what a flibbertigibbet I am. And my children. MY CHILDREN! Those stinkers took full advantage of the fact that mom could not raise her voice even the teensiest bit. Especially that scrappy 9-year-old of mine, the youngest. It was like he was poking a lion, and the lion could not roar.

Anyway, once again, will y’all please send some good vibes and tons of love to my podcast editor, Daniel, because he is getting this episode at the 11th hour to still get it on the air by Tuesday morning broadcast time. Even now, I’m still speaking through gallons of Throat Coat tea to talk for 30 minutes straight!  Goodness Daniel, you are so patient and awesome! HaHa!

So. Let’s talk goals. And let’s talk about them in a way you may not have ever tried before.

Listen, guys, I’ve done every kind of goal planning. I’ve used planners, like Michael Hyatt’s Best Year Ever, and the Passion Planner. I’ve taken a Joy of Goals workshop and even was a fascinator for the event for my friend Karen Hoffman here in St. Louis. There SMART goals and Top 3 Goals and so many ways to skin this cat. I’ve look at the year ahead and said, okay, what would I like to accomplish this next year. From vague to really specific, I have done it all.

But I have never tackled goals the way I am going to in 2018, and I invite you to do the same with me.

I want you to pick a BHAG. A Big Hair Audacious Goal. Sometimes when I say it, it comes out Big Hairy Ass Goal. I feel like both work. You choose what you want your A to mean. I will use them interchangeably, most definitely due to how feisty I am feeling at the time.
A good friend and former business coach, Amy Baue, trained under Tommi Wolfe, and we would set BHAGS every single month, so I am not the originator of that term. I might be the originator of the Big Hairy Ass Goal, but I can’t be sure.

But I want you to come up with the Big End Result you want to see for 2018. Like, Big. And you’re gonna pour your all into it, even if you fail miserably.
See, I told you this was different. I am already adding in the possibility of complete failure. YES!
We are going to actually plan to fail. Lots and lots of times.

But first, your BHAG for 2018. And see, since I have already told you we are planning to fail, your brain can’t argue with you. So when you say I want to lose 50 pounds and your brain says, NO WAY, you can say, “I know, it’s crazy! We’re probably going to fail! In fact, let’s plan on failing!”

Your brain is gonna twitch! Because normally it sees the potential of failure and opts to do nothing. We are going to show it the potential of failure and do it anyway!

Listen, if you think about the big hairy audacious goal and then back off from it because it’s too scary or we don’t give it our all, that right there can be a failure, too. But in that instance, we don’t have the chance to learn and grow and we don’t get the chance to face plant and then get back up and try again.

See, there is a reason I talked about striving to live a perfect life right before this. Make sure you listen to episode 26 on perfection and failure if you have not already, it’s the perfect primer to this week’s show on our BHAG and our plan to fail as many times as we can to get there.

Big ass goals have been a way of life for you, that’s how you are here today! You have built this business, you have seen success. Learning to walk was a big hairy audacious goal at one point for you. Your baby brain was like…no way, man! We can’t even stand on our own two feet, you think we are going to make it across the room? You’re nuts!

But you did it anyway. And you fell down. A lot. Maybe even slammed your forehead into the coffee table not the way down. Got a good goose egg – all the charming signs of a toddler figuring it out.

And then what happened? You got back up and kept going and You figured it out.

That’s what we are doing here. You are going to set a Big Hairy Audacious Goal and then plan to fail, over and over again, all year.

See, it’s not the Goal that’s scary. It’s the fact that getting there will likely require failure. That’s what keeps us from setting Big Hairy Audacious Goals and keeping them. When we set an Impossible Goal – The Impossible Dream! – our brains immediately say, but that’s Impossible. We are going to fail.
And failure set us up for humiliation and shame and ridicule and all that deep negative emotion our brains try so hard to avoid. So rather than fight our brains on this, let’s go all in. Dive headfirst into those negative emotions and let’s plan on failing.

Yes, I am totally serious. But here’s the super fun news. I am doing this right along with you! Y’all know that coaches get coached, right? And I have a personal development coach and a business coach and both of them have me doing this work. You don’t think I make you do something I wouldn’t do, do you?

Okay, so what does this planning to fail in order to achieve our BHAG actually look like.

First of all, we have to brainstorm. Normally, I save the action item of the week for the end, but this is an interactive episode if that’s even possible on a podcast!

I want you to take a few moments with pen and paper, and thinking about what you want to achieve in 2018 and just write write write. Everything you can think of, health goals, business goals, personal goals, no filtering, if it enters your brain, you write it down before the brain starts protesting. You can either pause here while you write, or keep listening as we move forward.

Now pick just one. Don’t over think it, don’t hem and haw. Pick just one. Preferably one that scares the holy hell out of out. One that seems impossible. One that stands up to the name Big Hair Audacious Goal.

Listen – your big hairy audacious goal may or may not be health related. Now, you may be saying WAIT a minute, why are we even here? This is Business Women Losing Weight, right?

YES. But this isn’t just any way to lose weight. This is not meal plans and workout plans and I’m just a weekly call-in accountability partner. The work We do here, the work I do one on one with clients has so much less to do with pounds and pants sizes, and everything to do with our ability to believe that we can handle failure, that we can handle success. That we are worth making the effort to go after something that scares the shit out of us.
And this BHAG should scare the shit out of us. It’s not a “wouldn’t it be nice” goal, it is an I want this. In my brain and in my bones, I want this by the end of 2018. It would mean the world to me, it would change my life. I don’t believe it’s actually possible at this time, but I am committed to getting there.

If it’s a health goal, if it’s a personal goal, if it’s a business goal – If you set this BHAG, you planned to fail – which I’m going to talk more about in just a moment – and follow these steps. Sisters, it will spill over into the other parts of your life. When you address the reason you overeat, you will see it affect your business life, your relationship life. Just this past week, I had an amazing mini-session with a woman who runs a real estate business with her fiancé. And I do this thing in our mini session where I have you rate on a scale of 1 to 10 where you think you are in the top three most important elements of your life right now. And through our session, we were able to see how address her business stress not only spilled over into her overeating but also spilled over into her financial struggles. That working on one area would have a massive impact on those other areas as well.

So….what is your goal.
When will you have it accomplished? Let’s put a date on it.
And what is the specific outcome – the result – that you will have that says, “yep, I accomplished that goal.”
It should be something you can measure and that you can easily explain to someone else.
Commit to this goal. Feel it in your bones. I want you to shout YES! When you nail the details of it.
It should excite and terrify you all at the same time.

Now, let’s listen to our brains. And I am pretty sure…our brains are freaking the fuck out. What have you done?
What have you committed us to!
You’re crazy. You’re nuts.

So the second part of this interactive episode is to hear your brain out. Let it have its piece.
Either later on when you do this all together or pause this episode right now, and brain dump. Everything that makes this impossible. Everything that could go wrong. All the stuff that we try to squash, I want you to let it all out. Get it all out there, in black and white, for all the world to see. This is not the good, this is the bad and the really freakin’ ugly.
All the worse case scenarios.
All the awful, dark emotions that you try to hide so well.

Guys, I specialize in shining light into our deep dark spaces. This is that, right here. Don’t be afraid, get it out!

So go, write write write and then write some more. You got it?

Okay, so you are either back or we’re just continuing on and you’re going to do this work when you have 20 minutes, right? RIGHT!

Because now, guess what guys. You have a list of all the ways you might fail. Your brain just told you them. All the awful things that could happen.
First of all, now that they are all on paper, PHEW!
And all of that that you wrote? Is FEAR.
All of your worse case scenarios are because your brain wants to avoid hurt and pain and humiliation.
Those are all just negative emotions in your body.

I have said it before, and I will continue to say it over and over again.
All emotion is energy in motion. It literally means that. In Latin. Emotion is energy in motion. That is all hurt and pain and humiliation is energy inside of our body. It’s the frequency that we feel. And we can, in fact, feel it – it buzzes or it feels heavy or it causes a swirling sensation inside our head.
All the anxiety and embarrassment and …oh, the one I hate…feeling EXPOSED and OPEN.
That is all energy, in motion, inside of your body.
It cannot hurt you or kill you or take you down.
Not if you are willing to just feel it.
And if you are willing to feel any emotion, there is nothing that you cannot accomplish.

I will say that again.

When you realize that you are willing to feel any emotion, there is nothing that you cannot accomplish.

That right there is the secret! Right there!

So that list of why this Big Hairy Audacious Goal is impossible just became your list of all the ways you are going to fail.
Turn that list of why it won’t work or won’t happen into things we plan to fail at.
Like every week!
What if you planned to fail 100 times over the course of 2018?
25 planned fails each quarter?
You can take your BHAG and break it down, even, into quarter-sized goals.

So one quarter at a time, take that list of all the reasons that this BHAG is impossible and create specific actions you can take, things that you will plan to fail at, to get the result you want.
Again, let your brain go all out, I mean, if we are planning to fail, right!

Let’s take a weight loss goal.
In one year, you want to lose 60 pounds.
That’s 15 pounds per quarter.

It’s big and hairy and audacious because you have never ever done it before, and your brain is sure it is impossible!

And it tells you all the ways it is impossible.
You’ve never done it before.
You’re not disciplined.
You’ll make an ass of yourself in the gym.
You don’t know how to make the right food.
You never put yourself first.
You’ll never have enough time.
People will laugh at you when they find out you’re going on a diet…AGAIN.
You can’t imagine living life without sugar and flour and all that other stupid stuff Amy has said.
Like Intermittent Fasting. Intermittent fasting is stupid.

So that’s your brain telling you how this ain’t gonna work! Right!

So how do you turn that into fails? Oh man, your brain has given you so much to work with! HaHaha!

So, I’m going to brainstorm all the planned fails it will take to lose 15 pounds in that first quarter.
I am going to fail at making a meal plan.
Shoot I can write that one down each freakin’ week!
I am going to fail at loving to work out.
I am going to fail at walking in the gym with the confidence that I belong there.
I am going to fail at learning how to make taco night healthier.
I am going to fail at setting my alarm early and scheduling in Self-Care time.
I am going to fail at scheduling in ME time to take care of me and plan my meals and plan my workouts and plan my meditation.
I am going to fail at delegating other tasks to make time for that.

And on your weekly calendar, you can schedule these activities that you are going to do, even if the result of that one action is failing.
And then you’re going to get up and you’re going to do it again.
And again.
You are going to keep face planting, like that toddler baby.

Now, if you’re thinking this is no different than all the times before, realize that there has already been a mental shift here.
In years past, it’s “I’m not gonna fail, I’m not gonna fail, crap, I failed!”
This next year,  we’ve changed that to “I’m going to do this, and I might fail!

And, these aren’t fails, like – “Oh, I said I was going to go to the gym, but I decided I was going to fail at that so I watched Netflix instead.”
That’s a copout fail. And Copout Fails are not what we are doing here.
You are going to Earn your Fails.
You are going to do your best to do the thing you said you are going to do, knowing that there’s a possibility of failure, and if you fall, you’re going to get back up and keep going.
It’s an opportunity to ask yourself what you can learn next time – maybe it’s meal planning and you didn’t consider having some backup plans for when client meetings go long.<
That’s an Earned Fail – you tried, it didn’t quite work, and you can learn.
Which is different than a Copout Fail – which is “Hey I’m gonna meal plan, and Oops, I just totally didn’t even bother!”

Copout fails keep you where you are. Stuck. Never changing. Not getting the Big Hairy Audacious Goals. Copout fails are about avoiding all that fear and negative emotion that came out in that list of why it’s impossible.
But remember – emotion is just energy in motion and when you realize there is no emotion you aren’t willing to feel, you will accomplish your Big Hairy Audacious Goals.
And Earned fails will help you grow and learn – about you, about what works, these fails will actually move your forward.

Are you seeing that difference?
I’m not sure if I gave you time to turn your “that’s impossible” into “planned fails.” Go ahead and create a list for each quarter. You may have a lot of overlap, but in that example of losing 60 pounds, maybe you’re adding next level stuff each quarter, like training for an event or a cooking class or hiring a ready-made meal service.
We are just shooting for 25 a quarter or 100 over the course of the year.
And, I’m doing this work myself and my BHAG is a big business goal. And my email list will be hearing about that this week on Thursday!
But in my weekly planned fails, I do have health-related stuff in there. So feel free to sneak in some other fails.
I mean….while we’re falling and all!
So go ahead and pause now if you are doing this work now.

Okay, so you have set your Big Hair Audacious Goal, you’ve let your brain throw its fit on why this is impossible, and you’ve turned those impossibilities into all the ways you will plan to fail.
Imagine this. You plan to fail at least twice a week, every single week, towards your Big Hairy Audacious Goal.

So then I like to set a Word. A general theme of the year. Look at all you have written and is there a word that keeps coming up for you. A positive word. A motivational word.
I have set words for the year for the past three years and am always amazed at how they turn out to be completely accurate, even if they weren’t what I went into the year thinking.
And that’s what this entire exercise on Big Hairy Audacious Goals is like. You may or may not hit that exact goal, you may or may not get the exact result. But holy shit, what you will get along the way of trying to get there!
What you will learn about yourself, the emotions that you will learn to get a comfortable feeling.

For me, 2015 was Authenticity. 2016 was Badass. And 2017 was Slay.
And they were all completely accurate as to what my year was, but for so many different reasons than what I originally intended.

You will see that with your Big Hairy Audacious Goals.
I have more episodes on this. This is at least a 3-4 series of episodes, so be back here next week when we talk about commitment and massive action on those BHAGS and on that list of fails.
But just know that you will grow as a persona and it will spill over into the other areas of your life and you will be amazed at what you accomplish by doing this work.

Brain Dump all the ways it’s impossible.
Turn all those impossibilities into planned fails.
