Episode Show Notes:
The difference between dreaming about your future life and actually living it is becoming future focused.
Living future-focused is not:
- Making a list of goals
- Creating a vision board
- Dragging your past along with you
- Focusing on how far you have come.
Living future focused is about getting into the mind of the person who has already achieved your dreams. As you go through your days and face regular situations and emotions, in both business and family and in health, asking yourself, “What would future me do?”
It’s the difference between thinking like the person who wants to achieve those goals and thinking like the person who already has achieved those goals.
Start practicing What Would Future You Do in your mind. As you go through your work days and your family nights, and normal stressors and questions arise, ask yourself what Future You would do. At this point, we aren’t even changing our actions, we are just visualizing what it would look and feel like if you reacted differently to a specific situation.
And please share in the comments below or as a review on iTunes an example of how you might do something different based on What Would Future You Do.
It’s so fun to start putting this into practice!

(Music) Welcome to Business Women Losing Weight, a community for fabulous women small business owners so laser focused on building their businesses….they have been sacrificing their health! Together we’re going to get back your time, get back your energy, and teach you to live naturally thin.
I’m your host, Amy Latta, and I’m all in! Are you comin’ with me? Let’s take care of you so you can take care of business!
Hello, my badass business sisters! How are you! I am feeling fabulous!
Do you realize that we only have two months left in this year? But that does not mean we are done for the year! Nuh uh! So much can be accomplished in less than 60 days!
How many new clients can you sign?
How many pounds can you lose?
What new act of self-care can you master?
Right? It’s all about getting your mind wrapped around what is POSSIBLE! We don’t need to wait for the new year!
For those of you listening in the future, it’s the first week of November 2017 right now, and I can’t wait to meet you in the future someday! Ha!
Not so subtle tie-in to what this episode is all about! Ladies, I have introduced a new coaching tool to my one-on-one clients, and it’s blowing everyone’s damn mind. I know it’s blowing mine! And that tool is teaching how to live future-focused. Now that’s just fancy coach speak, though, what the heck does living future-focused mean, and how are we supposed to do that.
First of all, let’s talk about what living future-focused isn’t. What it is Not.
Living future focused is not just making a list of your goals and then putting them away. Anyone can (and practically everyone does) make a list of what they want life to look like and then rarely, if ever, visit it again. How many times in my life did I make SMART goals and then put them in a drawer!
Literally anyone can do that.
Heck, don’t we do that once a year already? That’s how New Year’s resolutions are formed, we decide we are going to change something, but we don’t go any farther than thinking, “Hey, wouldn’t that be nice!”
And then a year later, we’re making the same goals, and not one step closer to actually making them happen.
Living future focused is not throwing a vision board party. They are so much fun, yes, I am not knocking them at all! My friend and fellow life coach, Jenny Beilsmith, hosts fantastic vision board parties – I’ve shared the one I made at one of her parties on Facebook Lives a few times – and they can be very powerful tools! But the mere creating of a board does not guarantee that anything on that board will come to fruition, if you don’t change your daily life and start living with daily intention! The board is only as good as that list of goals, how well it works depends on how often you incorporate it into your daily life!
Living future focused also is not dragging your past along with you. We love to tell stories of our past. And we love to define ourselves by our pasts. Many of our stories are shaped from a, “And that’s why i am the way I am, and why nothing will ever change!” As if we have to keep carrying all that around with us.
Our past is important in that it all needed to happen in order to create the person that we are today. We can honor our past, however, without dragging it into the future.
I liken our past like a small child wrapped around your leg. Any parent can relate! You are trying to move forward, but there’s your past….dragging along the ground, trying to hold on, death grip around your ankle, like a toddler dragging along floor! And honestly, that is holding you back. You can move forward, but it is much slower and it wears you down.
So I have recently kicked that toddler off! Ha! Don’t call DFS on me! I’m kicking toddlers across the room!
Shake that past off. It is holding you back. You can honor it, for being what made you who you are today. But you do not have to keep dragging it around with you, defining who you are.
Living future focused is also not staying focused on how far you have come. This was a huge lesson I learned recently. I would face the scary things I want to do to move forward, and then suddenly, I wanted to focused on…well, look how far I’ve come! I’ve made HUGE strides in my life in the past couple of years. My business is growing and my health is better than it’s been in … well, ever! It’s so much better here than where I have been in the past, and I could get comfortable here! Ah….and doesn’t our brain love comfort. By focusing on how far we have come, it’s actually a little trick our brian does to us so that we’ll stop! “Geez! Enough change already! Can’t we take a break? Look at how far we’ve come!”
All of those things sound future focused, but they are not. They are actually little devices that we can use to trick ourselves into thinking we are making progress, but are actually keeping us right where we are.
So what does living future-focused actually look like?
I started added a new layer to my one-on-one coaching called “What Would Future You Do?” Kinda like what would Jesus do, but in this case, we are focused on you being the maker of your own destiny. God knows what you are capable of, he’s waiting for us to catch up!
Living future-focused means thinking like the person who already has want you want, those things on that vision board or that goals list.
Let. That. Sink. In.
How you think right now has gotten you what you have right now. If you want something different, you are going to need to think differently. But not just any differently.
You need to think like the person who already has what you want.
Think about someone who already has what you want. Literally name and visualize them. Don’t be vague. Name your person. Maybe it’s a famous person or a business colleague.
Now, do you think if you put their brain inside your head, they could get you where you want to go?
I have asked this of all my clients so far, and they have said, “Yeah, probably.”
Now, it’s not knowledge we are so much concerned about. That person has learned certain how-tos, certainly does different things, and has access to different things.
But they definitely think differently, they operate on a different plane than we do right now. And that is is what we need to tap into.
Living future-focused is more about the emotions and frequency this future thinking evokes, than the actual things that you have. It’s like your vision board, but taking it a step further by bringing something very similar into reality now, but it’s not an exact replica.
For instance, I have a Tesla on my vision board. The car, not the inventor. Now, I am not ready to go buy a Tesla today. But future-me can. How can I channel that Tesla buyer, now?
You see, it’s less about the car and more about how I carry myself.
It’s rarely about the things we want, and more about what we make those things mean.
If I have worked to earn a Tesla, I live with a certain air of confidence.
I am more sure of my self, and probably not dressed like something the cat just drug in.
I am not afraid to ask for what I want.
I am not afraid to send that proposal.
I am not afraid to be vulnerable with potential clients.
Ah, are you seeing this a little clearer?
Living future-focused means absolutely defining what you want your future to look like – like those goal lists and vision boards.
But take it a step further and think from a deeper place than just a list of goals.
Who do you want to be?
What do you want to achieve?
What will your life be like?
Take yourself there, put details on it, numbers and descriptors.
And when you take yourself there, tap into the feelings and emotions of that place.
Future You operates on a different frequency than current you.
Tap into that frequency
Living future-focused is going through your life now, and consciously asking yourself What Would Future Me Do?
I did this activity myself recently, and I realized that I had been hesitating to pull the trigger on a few key decisions in my business.
Future Amy, though wouldn’t be hesitating. She sees what she needs to do, and she does it, because she doesn’t have time for that minor hesitation, it’s done already!
For one of my weight clients, she thought about some anxiety she was feeling about a big wedding she was attending last week. When she consciously and purposely thought about what Future Her would do, she immediately felt more relaxed. Future Her doesn’t get anxious about food at weddings. Future Her decides ahead of time what she is going to eat and not going to eat, and she doesn’t argue with herself about it anymore. Future Her is focused on having the best time she can at that wedding, and that doesn’t involve being focused on the food, but focused on having fun.
Are you picking up on the vibe now?
Define what your future looks like, with specifics, and then tap into the mind of that person who has already achieved what you want. That person is YOU.
It’s the difference between thinking like the person who wants to achieve those goals, and thinking like the person who already has achieved those goals.
I know. That’s a light switch flip right there.
And it just might be the difference between coming up with a list of dreams and actually achieving those dreams.
